Is Glowing and Healthy Skin still possible as we age?
Absolutely! And we don't have to break the bank to get it!
Whether you are trying to maintain that glow or are trying to get it back, here are some proven skin care ingredients that will help. Try adding these to your daily skin care routine along with moisturiser for extra skin care benefits.
Peptides
Peptides are compounds made up of amino acids. They are smaller than a protein and are found in every cell and tissue in the human body. Peptides send signals to your cells to produce more collagen, which is one of the major building blocks of your skin.
Peptides are scientifically proven to:
Improve skin barrier Increase Collagen production which can plump skin and lips, and when skin is firmer and plumper, wrinkles and fine lines will be less visible. Improves skin elasticity Ease inflammation. Can help clear breakouts.
One of my HG can’t live without products is the Ordinary’s “The Buffet.” It’s a concentrated multi-peptide serum that gives seriously noticeable results!
And for $14.80 CDN its totally worth it to give it a try!
Retinoids
Retinoids refer to a group of compounds that are derived from Vitamin A. They are the darling of the skin care world and, when used regularly, your skin tone will be firmer, skin texture smoother, diminishes fine lines, and your overall complexion will be brighter! Who doesn’t love that!!
All retinoids are equal....
𝙍𝙚𝙩𝙞𝙣𝙤𝙡 Is found in many products that you can buy off the shelf. Its a natural form of Vitamin A. Retinol itself doesn't actually affect the skin directly. Enzymes within the skin must first convert retinol into retinoic acid. It's only when it is converted into retinoic acid that it becomes effective. You skin will convert Retinol to Retinoic Acid at different rates so results will differ depending on your age and skin type. It’s a slow worker. You might not see much in the way of results for up to six months or longer. Can initially cause minor flaking of the skin but goes away quickly.
Paula's Choice and The Ordinary have some fantastic Retinol products that are effective both in performance and cost!
𝙍𝙚𝙩𝙞𝙣-𝘼 THIS is the GOLD standard in skin care! Prescription only, it’s the brand name for the medication Tretinoin. Retin-A is a synthetic form of vitamin A. Because you don't have to wait for the skin to convert it (to retinoic acid), Retin-A works faster and is more powerful than retinol products. You’ll see improvement in six to eight weeks. You're more likely to notice initial side effects like dryness, redness, peeling and flaking, while using Retin-A, so moisturize well. To prevent this, start low and slow: a pea sized amount twice a week, gently patted on dry skin. I started at .025% and never had any issues.
Always use a good sunscreen when using any retinoids!!!
I’ve moved up to Retin-A and I’m loving the results!

AHA's/ BHA's/ and Vitamin C
Help your skin texture and fade those pesky sun spots!
Even when we try to keep them away, they eventually come our way.
This is the number one concern that women over 40 say that they have when they ask me to colour match them.
BHAs ( Salicylic Acid) AHAs (Glycolic, malic, citric, lactic, and tartaric acids) are fabulous for anti-aging. They are very effective at exfoliating skin and reducing fine lines, preventing acne, fading dark spots, increasing skin thickness, and evening out skin tone and texture.
Regardless of whether you use AHAs or BHA, the end results will very likely be identical. Both chemicals are very effective in removing dead skin cells, and promoting the growth and health of living skin cells. No need to concern yourself if your products have AHA or BHA in them unless you experience some adverse reaction to the one that you are using.
(Note: do not use acids and retinol at the same time. You can use your acid during the morning and the retinol at night)
Vitamin C.
The star of the show! Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant, and it proven to reduce the number of sunburned cells as well as reverse age-related damage to skin. There are lots of Vit. C products on the market. You want to find one that is in air and light tight packaging because Vit. C degrades quickly when it’s exposed to the air and light. MY fave is this 25% vitamin C spot treatment by Paulaschoice. It has completely faded large sun spots on my skin after too much time in the sun! This is concentrated and meant for spot treatment.
Along with proper cleansing, moisturising, and consistent sunscreen use, these can totally up your skin care game!
DO you have any products that you have found make a huge difference or ones that you would never use again? I would love to hear your suggestions!
